Supposedly, bartenders created the Suffering Bastard cocktail as a hangover cure for WWII soldiers—two facts that might help explain its eye-catching name. However, this cocktail is so dang tasty that few drinkers can resist seconds…or thirds. So, by the time you finish your Suffering Bastards, there’s a good chance you’ll be, well, a suffering bastard!

But don’t worry, we’ve got a secret to make this cocktail extra curative: CBD! While our citrus-flavored CBD oil isn’t a cure-all, we bet it’ll take away a whole lot of suffering.

While the Suffering Bastard is often lumped in with other Tiki bar classics, it’s technically not a Tiki recipe. Sure, this drink has plenty of spice and citrus, but it doesn’t call for rum. Still, since this drink was invented during the Tiki boom, many people assume it’s part of the “Polynesian pantheon.”

In recent years, some bartenders have made the Suffering Bastard conform with Tiki bar standards by swapping out certain ingredients. For instance, you might run across Suffering Bastard recipes that call for spiced rum. There are even a few Suffering Bastard variations that use the standard Tiki ingredient orgeat syrup.

However, if you want to enjoy a Tiki bar recipe, we’d suggest looking into more standard recipes like the Mai Tai rather than changing the Suffering Bastard. FYI, you could find our CBD Mai Tai recipe on this link.

CBD Suffering Bastard Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. bourbon
  • .1 oz. gin
  • ½ oz lime juice
  • A few dashes of Angostura bitters
  • ~ 4 oz of ginger beer
  • 1 dropperful Tribe CBD oil (citrus)
  • Fresh mint sprig

Directions

  • Pour bourbon, gin, lime juice, and Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker
  • Add ice and shake for a few seconds
  • Strain into an ice-filled highball glass
  • Drizzle Tribe CBD oil on top
  • Garnish with a mint sprig

As mentioned in the intro, the Suffering Bastard was created to help soothe soldiers’ tummies during World War II. A large part of this drink’s supposed “curative” properties come from the inclusion of ginger beer.

While we’re not sure all that alcohol adds any medicinal value, there’s no doubt ginger could help with various conditions. Indeed, recent research suggests ginger root has an incredibly positive effect on digestion and nausea.

If you’d like to harness the healing potential of this spicy superfood, we’d recommend grating a bit of fresh ginger root every morning and adding it to a glass of water. While you’re at it, why not add a bit of our citrus-flavored CBD oil for extra health benefits.
