If you’re traveling to DC during the summer, then be prepared to sweat…a lot. With its steamy, swamp-like temps, the nation’s capital has a reputation for tiring out even the most enthusiastic tourists.

Luckily for us, we can take much-needed breaks thanks to central air conditioning. However, in the not-too-distant past, people had to find other ways to cool down. Hence the creation of one of Washington’s coolest cocktails: the Gin Rickey!

With just a few simple ingredients and zero added sweeteners, the Gin Rickey is an ideal drink to sip on a sunny day. For an extra touch of tart, we’re going to add a bit of our citrus-flavored CBD oil to the mix. Who knows, maybe the extra “chill” from CBD will help get rid of all that excess sweat!

A Not So Sweet Standard

Although the Gin Rickey has become an undisputed standard, it’s not the “original” drink that Col. Joe Rickey ordered in the 19th century. Indeed, we know for a fact that Mr. Rickey preferred bourbon rather than gin.

Interestingly, as this drink became trendier across the nation, more patrons asked their bartenders to swap out bourbon for gin. Apparently, the majority of patrons liked how gin’s botanicals played off of the lime juice. Hence, the version that has gained mainstream attention is the Gin Rickey.

If you’re a stickler for authenticity, you might want to grab a bottle of bourbon rather than gin when preparing this CBD cocktail. Be sure to let us know which version you prefer on Tribe CBD’s many social media pages!

You could easily burn out your brain exploring all the “Rickey recipes” that are now online. Whatever spirit you enjoy, we’re pretty sure somebody on earth has tried it in a Rickey variation. While most people appreciate how gin naturally compliments fresh lime juice, don’t let that stop you from trying other spirits like vodka or rum.

Also, just because the Gin Rickey is well-known for excluding sugar, that doesn’t mean you can’t add a dab of simple syrup. In fact, many people nowadays like to mix simple syrup, Club soda, and lime juice to make an “alcohol-free Rickey.” While you’re at it, add some fresh fruit like cherries or blackberries to make this summertime drink sizzle!
